because they judge him based on the episode he fought Tai and because he got married to Sora even though it was the director's decision really I mean its clear he didnt have that sort of feeling for her

Ok I will try to give my views and how I think his character is.
- He is not just your typical lone wolf in the beginning he is very protective of his brother TK because he tries to convince himself that TK needs him but later on admits he's the one who needs TK the reason for this is his parents divorce it leads to him feeling unwanted and insecure. - Matt may seem coldhearted on the surface but the truth is he hides under a shell not letting anyone see how he really feels and trying to show that emotions, feelings, caring for someone all that doesnt matter to him he also doesnt want to see anyone cry as he cares deeply about the others. - His insecurity also leads him to become agressive especially towards Tai as he mentions to Gabumon that he feels Tai is trying to take his place as TK's older brother but Gabumon luckily manages to convince him that no matter what Tai does he'll never be able to replace Matt as TK's older brother. - He also feels unwanted and like he cant count on anyone as he mentions if his family doesnt want him then nobody will but in that he is able to realise that even though his family is seperated they still love him and he does have people who care about him. - At first he doesnt value friendship but thanks Gabumon learns the true meaning of friendship and that he does have friends. This is seen through when Tai says in the original version "I always believed you would come back to us Yamato kun" and Matt thanks Tai for believing in him and giving him time while apologising for not realising things sooner this triggers the crest of friendship healing the injured Wargreymon. - Another thing Matt does is when Sora is trapped in the same dark cave that Matt was trapped in he helps her realise that the cave is made from her negative feelings and only she can get rid of them.
Overall Matt while he has his flaws he learns from his mistakes and is a good character in my opinion. i hope this helps.

Matt had to be the character I could relate to most during 01 and 02, he was a child going through his parents divorce (which I was as well at the release of 01), he was Mr. Cool Lone Wolf Guy, he was a musician, plus he was Gabumon's partner
there were points though in 01 when I just thought for crying out loud Matt get a grip
